Student Money

Student Finance Matters

Student MoneyIf you want to make the most of your time and money while you’re studying, you’ll need to learn to do the budget thing sooner rather than later.

• Don’t automatically assume that your parents will help you out with your finances. Ask them first and work out your weekly and monthly budget accordingly.

• Most schools and colleges offer subsided food in the canteen. Buy your food there if it is cheaper and you will have more money for other things.

• Shop around for everything that you buy to find the best deal. For example, there are many different mobile phone deals available and getting the best one for you could save you hundreds of pounds.
• If you are going to university, some companies are willing to sponsor students on certain courses. Write to companies early to find out about sponsorship opportunities.

• Don’t carry cash around unless you have money you are willing to spend. The temptation to spend it will be too great!

• Make sure you take advantage of all discounts available for young people. For example, if you use public transport regularly, make sure you have a Young Person’s Railcard.

• Finally, force yourself to budget so you don’t run out of money in the middle of the month.
