Northbrook College Sussex A-level results are out this week and there are still places left on university level courses starting this autumn at Northbrook College Sussex. Situated on the South East coast, Northbrook College provides a large range of vocational university level courses that are perfect for sustaining your progress into the various industries they serve. We are also an Affiliated College of the University of Brighton, which validates our degrees.
Northbrook was formed when the West Sussex College of Design merged with the historic Chelsea College of Aeronautical Engineering and Worthing College of Technology. Our Aerospace, Engineering and Business programme areas have all been designated as Centres of Vocational Excellence and many of our courses have an established reputation at national shows and exhibitions such as New Designers and Graduate Fashion Week.
We pride ourselves on providing a supportive learning culture, with compact teaching groups, enthusiastic staff and a friendly atmosphere for your studies within a professional and creative environment.
Paul Goldsmith has recently graduated from an HND in Graphic Design
I decided to do an HND as it was the quickest way to gain a qualification that would facilitate a career change into graphic design. I had previously graduated from Coventry University in 2005 as a Vehicle Designer and had been working for three years in industry, resulting in my portfolio being heavily automotive based. However, the industry wasn't healthy and finding work was getting harder. As I already had a design background I was able to fast track into the final year of the HND. This was perfect for me as I did not want to hang around in education much longer.
I had just returned from travelling and was able to instantly enrol on the course. Within a day of applying the Course Leader had arranged to view my portfolio and accepted me on the course.
The HND offered me the opportunity to get plenty of different graphic design projects into my portfolio over the year instead of one or two major projects as would be offered on a BA.
The size of the class was a definite bonus - as the class size was relatively small, the time spent with the tutor was high. This was the single biggest difference I noticed between the HND and the BA that I had previously graduated from. On the BA there were 80 people graduating from the course so you really had to fight to get the most direction from tutors. Having experienced and practising tutors on the HND was an obvious benefit for the students. Course Lecturer, Bill Strohacker from Strohacker Creative, was a brilliant tutor as he knew the industry and could give examples of working standards and how to prepare for print, etc. In fact, the course being very much geared towards preparing students to go straight into industry was a good characteristic of the course.
I was very happy with the course and got some freelance work from course connections and doing live work which was really helpful. As with any course, you got out of it what you put in. I was proactive in finding placements and pushing for work outside of the College as I really believe that placements are the single most important part of the course. If you can get one then your chances of finding work after college is massively increased.
I would have perhaps liked there to be more live projects as it seemed that in previous years there had been involvement with large companies like PUMA who ended up giving work experience to some students and also jobs after the course.
At the moment I am looking for a position in a studio in London, as well as doing some freelance work. With its long history, I have found that Northbrook is very much a well known and respected College for graphics in the area. Many practising designers have passed through it and are willing to offer help and advice to current students. I am hoping this will put me in good stead to find work.
