Clearing is the part of the year when applicants who have not been successful in finding a place at university can approach those institutions which still have vacancies. Last year 30,000 applicants were placed on a course at an university through clearing.
To some, Clearing will seem like a daunting prospect, compounded with anxiety, anger or sadness that exams have not gone as well as hoped and that places at preferred universities have been lost. This step by step guide aims to take some of that strain away by explaining how Clearing works, from start to finish.
So you did not get the grades you needed. Firstly, don't despair! Last year more than 60,000 applicants who entered Clearing were successful in getting a place at university. It is essential, however, to get to grips with Clearing quickly in order that you can get the best out of it. Even if you did not get the results you wanted, you still have a chance to make them count.
In 2009, UCAS have introduced a new electronic version of Clearing. If you are in Clearing, please follow this advice very carefully.
If the tutor is interested in your application, you will be asked to submit yourself to the university electronically, through your UCAS track account. Details on how this is done can be found on our step by step guide to Clearing page. Please do not submit a Clearing Application to the university via UCAS Track unless an admissions tutor asks you to.
All offers are made subject to the receipt of your electronic Clearing Application and any other verification of qualifications the university may require. As the UCAS instructions explain, any offer made orally or in writing is unofficial until we have received your electronic Clearing Application and we have told UCAS electronically about your place.
If you're successful and we want to make you an offer, we will tell UCAS of our decision electronically, and this will appear on your UCAS track account. From that point, you won't be allowed to deal with any other university in the scheme - so make that you're certain of your decision..
If we can't offer you a place, we will return you into Clearing electronically and you can approach another university.
City University London is accepting enquiries regarding Clearing from those who already have their relevant results, however please note that Clearing has not officially opened.
Clearing will open at 8.00am on Thursday 20 August 2009.
