Clearing with Confidence
As A level results day looms, join Clearing Expert Christine Marchant and Student Jason Morrison as they offer advice on how to navigate the UK’s university Clearing system
From Thursday 16th August students across the country will have to make a decision that may impact the rest of their lives, as A Level results are released to the nation.
Around 30,000 students who have not made the grade to get into either of their UCAS choices, or who were late applicants, will have to go through clearing. But exactly how does it work and what are your entitlements?
Over 1,300 pupils who are expecting their A level results across England this month, were asked whether they were confident they knew how clearing worked.
Two-thirds weren’t confident they understood how clearing worked. In fact, 44% said they didn’t have a clue at all. Only 32% of those polled said that yes, they were confident they knew how it worked and what to do. The situation was worst in the North West of England, where three-quarters had either no idea or were unsure.
To help demystify the process, TVU has produced ‘The Clearing Show’ - a 10-minute TV programme – which students, teachers and parents can watch on the TVU website as an informal guide to going through the UK’s University clearing system.
VU’s clearing manager Christine Marchant says: “At TVU, a lot of activity goes on in August and September towards getting students sorted and onto a course that’s right for them. A lot of students facing worse grades than they expected are anxious and even depressed but the most important thing to remember is not to panic and to keep calm.”
